Kiehl’s on Wheels hits Edinburgh*

DSC_0689Last week, on a rare sunny evening, I meandered over to George Street after work to check out the most colourful display on George Street. Kiehl’s brand new bus rolled into town a week or so ago, and has been providing the city with the best beauty products ever since.

Considering I use and adore at least five separate Kiehl’s every morning, it was a no brainer that I would head down and see what the brand was up to, plus it’s always fun to go to blogger events. Kiehl’s, I’m glad to say, didn’t disappoint – with the most adorable picnic benches laden with goodie bags, it was so lovely to meet some Edinburgh-based bloggers.

After some introductions, as well as a snoop around the Kiehl’s bus (it’s packed with brand favourites for skin, hair and body) it was time for the evening to begin. We packed into the benches, and got to grips with learning all about the best of what Kiehl’s have to offer.

Jennifer (from Tartan Brunette) bravely volunteered to be the model for the evening, letting Kiehl’s expert Holly demonstrate how to best use and apply each product.

Starting right from the basics, we sniffed, rubbed and patted in a whole shelf of products, falling harder in love each time. There were a tonne of old favourites, including many which I use on a daily basis, but getting to try out products like the Ultra Facial Cleanser, means that my wish list has grown rather long since last week!

There was a lucky-dip prize at the end of the evening, which the very lucky (and lovely) Emma from unf4bul0us won, and we all toddled home, clutching our groaning Kiehl’s bags. Very kindly, we were treated to a mix of hero products as well as some treats from a Scottish pop-up across the street, which I’ve been using ever since – I’d forgotten how great Kiehl’s old-school lip balm is! There was also a full size bottle of the new Cactus Flower Hydrating Mist, which is super handy, as I’ve blown through half of my first bottle already!

The bus will be chilling in the middle of George Street for the next week or so, and then is starts up it’s travels again. So, if you hear it’s heading down your way, pop in, say hello, and treat yourself to something lovely!

Thank you to Holly, Kiehl’s and Kiehl’s on Wheels for having me!

Harvey Nichols – The Art of Style*

Harvey Nichols - The Art of Style

If you’re from Edinburgh, you’ll know how glorious Tuesday was. It was the perfect Autumn evening – all golden light and cool breezes, and it was an absolute joy to walk down George Street to Harvey Nichols to attend their Art of Style Trend Presentation.

Nestled in the middle of all of this season’s most beautiful clothes, I got to attend the most fabulous panel discussion which focused on the links between art and fashion (i.e. my main two loves)! As an Art History major, I can seriously geek out over the tiniest brushstroke or fabric pattern, so the evening was a must for me!

Designed as the pinnacle of Harvey Nichols’ The Art of Style calendar, the panel of speakers was really something special – the iconic Molly Parkin, Harvey Nichols’ Buying Partner Darren Skey, Project Director of Fashion at Edinburgh College of Art Mal Burkinshaw along with Anne Lyden the Curator of Photography at National Galleries of Scotland.

Discussions ranged from Molly Parkins’ rather unorthodox childhood in a Welsh mining town to the technicalities faced by fashion buyers, as well as the on-going David Bailey exhibition currently showing at the National Portrait Gallery not to mention the burgeoning number of students currently flooding fashion schools. We even got a glimpse of Molly’s technicolor do!

The conversation flowed freely for over an hour, and the chance to ask such a distinguished panel questions was a real thrill! I don’t think I’m alone in saying that I could have easily sat listening to everyone chat for hours, and once the panel had concluded, there was a chance to chat to everyone, resulting in the most interesting discussions which were wonderfully plied by the free flowing prosecco (Harvey Nichols’ own is absolutely delicious I have to say!) Chatting with both Molly and Anne was really incredible, and I’ve already arranged a trip with friends to visit the David Bailey Stardust exhibition next week (it’s on until the 18th of October).

Thank you so much to Harvey Nichols for inviting me to this event.

Belsazar Vermouth Masterclass at Harvey Nichols*

Belsazar Vermouth Masterclass

As a rule, I’m not the world’s biggest drinker. I’m able to nurse a drink or two throughout an evening, and I usually go for something simple and uncomplicated when I choose to imbibe. I’m not sure I’d ever even looked at a bottle of vermouth before, so when I was kindly invited to a masterclass with exciting new brand Belsazar at Harvey Nichols led by the incredibly knowledgable Fliss, I knew I couldn’t refuse!

Harvey Nichols Belsazar

If, like me, you’re not too familiar with the tipple – vermouth is a fortified wine which originally started out as something of a medicine. Typically it’s found in cocktails like Negronis and Americanos, although Belsazar is creating a vermouth which can be used in classic concoctions as well as just sipped on its own with a little ice. We started the evening learning about the history of vermouth, and quickly got round to tastings – Belsazar is a German company, and get their grapes from the South Baden region. The company use only the highest quality, and carefully blend the wines with brandy and a touch of botanicals for flavour. Belsazar are the only people to produce German vermouth, and it’s such a discovery! We first tried all of the four variations (Dry, Red, Rosé and White) making sure to really notice their scents and flavour notes, I was seriously surprised at how delicious all four were!

Belsazar Vermouth

We started with the Dry, which had notes of chamomile tea and fruit thanks to the inclusion of apricot brandy in the mix. We then moved onto the Rosé which was delicious! I think this one was my favourite thanks to creamy and fruity notes in it. Since it has the lowest alcohol content, it’s perfect for sipping on summer evenings, and it was absolutely delicious when mixed with ice, tonic water and a twist of grapefruit. My whole table thought it just tasted so light and refreshing, I think we all pledged to buy a bottle! Next up was the White, which is probably the most traditional of Belsazar’s vermouths. The refreshing and fruity notes would be a perfect accompaniment to spicy and oriental dishes, and it was incredibly refreshing when mixed as part of a classic martini. We finished up by tasting the Red vermouth. By far, this had the fullest and spiciest flavour, and when sipped alone it just tasted like mulled wine and Christmas. I think my most unexpected find of the evening came courtesy of the Red vermouth mixed as part of an espresso martini. When combined, the Red gave the cocktail a delicious depth of flavour, whilst the notes of cinnamon and cloves really sparkled with the coffee notes, in a word, it was incredible!

Prior to the masterclass, I’d never really considered vermouth as a drinks option. Usually I just go for something like a G&T or glass of champagne, but I’m a complete convert! Thankfully, the Harvey Nichols Forth Floor bar is already stocked up with Belsazar, whilst the Food Department will soon be filled with all four varieties of the vermouth available for purchase. I think I’m going to start with the Rosé whilst the weather is nice, and start experimenting with some mixes!

Thank you so much to Harvey Nichols and Belsazar for inviting me! You can find Belsazar vermouth here
