Moi Beauty – Edinburgh*

dsc_0915

A few months ago I took something of a pledge to take better care of myself, and as a result I’ve been sampling some of the best spas and nail bars Edinburgh has to offer! Last week, Moi Beauty in Edinburgh’s Morningside was on my must-visit list, when I was kindly invited to give their Luxury Shellac Mani and Pedi.

The salon is an absolute haven in the city – all exposed brick walls and white; it feels more New York than Edinburgh. I popped in on a rather dull Saturday morning, and the welcome couldn’t be warmer. I was ushered in out of the drizzle, shown to one of the salon chairs and tasked with choosing my colours.

Shellac is no joke at Moi Beauty – I’m not sure that I’ve ever come across a bigger selection of colours to choose from! Even though my heart was all about the pink and neon, my head prevailed and I opted for chic and understated nude for my fingers and a deep chocolate for my toes.

dsc_0938

My morning started with my Luxury Shellac Pedicure, and it was exactly what I needed! While I poured over Hello! magazine, my therapist Claire got to work. My feel were buffed, exfoliated and massaged, and honestly, I have to say, Claire worked miracles! My heels were filed into submission, any a bit of reflexology soothed away the week’s stress. Then, once the Shellac had been applied and dried, my feet were dipped into bags of liquid paraffin to soften them even further.

dsc_0936

Then, once the paraffin had hardened and been peeled off, I popped over to the nail bar for a Shellac manicure. Considering I had peeled off a three week old shellac manicure the night before, my nails weren’t in the best of shape. Claire didn’t so much as blink, and got to grips with her clippers and files, leaving my fingers looking immeasurably better!

dsc_0930

My cuticles were softened and clipped, and I was buffed into having hands that look like they belong to an adult! My beige polish is just beautiful, and it’s such a great choice for a long-wearing polish, as it goes with absolutely everything! It was such a heavenly way to start the weekend, and a week later, my nails still look perfect!

Thank you so much to Moi Beauty for having me! You can find their website here.

Kiehl’s on Wheels hits Edinburgh*

DSC_0689Last week, on a rare sunny evening, I meandered over to George Street after work to check out the most colourful display on George Street. Kiehl’s brand new bus rolled into town a week or so ago, and has been providing the city with the best beauty products ever since.

DSC_0745

Considering I use and adore at least five separate Kiehl’s every morning, it was a no brainer that I would head down and see what the brand was up to, plus it’s always fun to go to blogger events. Kiehl’s, I’m glad to say, didn’t disappoint – with the most adorable picnic benches laden with goodie bags, it was so lovely to meet some Edinburgh-based bloggers.

DSC_0707

After some introductions, as well as a snoop around the Kiehl’s bus (it’s packed with brand favourites for skin, hair and body) it was time for the evening to begin. We packed into the benches, and got to grips with learning all about the best of what Kiehl’s have to offer.

DSC_0714

Jennifer (from Tartan Brunette) bravely volunteered to be the model for the evening, letting Kiehl’s expert Holly demonstrate how to best use and apply each product.

DSC_0742

Starting right from the basics, we sniffed, rubbed and patted in a whole shelf of products, falling harder in love each time. There were a tonne of old favourites, including many which I use on a daily basis, but getting to try out products like the Ultra Facial Cleanser, means that my wish list has grown rather long since last week!

DSC_0771

There was a lucky-dip prize at the end of the evening, which the very lucky (and lovely) Emma from unf4bul0us won, and we all toddled home, clutching our groaning Kiehl’s bags. Very kindly, we were treated to a mix of hero products as well as some treats from a Scottish pop-up across the street, which I’ve been using ever since – I’d forgotten how great Kiehl’s old-school lip balm is! There was also a full size bottle of the new Cactus Flower Hydrating Mist, which is super handy, as I’ve blown through half of my first bottle already!

DSC_0705

The bus will be chilling in the middle of George Street for the next week or so, and then is starts up it’s travels again. So, if you hear it’s heading down your way, pop in, say hello, and treat yourself to something lovely!

Thank you to Holly, Kiehl’s and Kiehl’s on Wheels for having me!

Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Oil*

DSC_0206

When I popped into Harvey Nichols last week to learn about Dermalogica’s brand new Phyto Replenish Oil (read about it here), it would be fair to say I fell more than a little bit in love. As someone with dry skin, I’m always on the lookout for great skincare, and I was just blown away by the new addition to the brand’s line up. Containing extract of Chia Seed oil and Sunflower oil it the perfect thing for salvaging summer-ravaged skin.

DSC_0198

Packaged in a chic little white glass bottle, the Phyto Replenish Oil may look inconspicuous, but it’s an absolute powerhouse of a product which most skin types will absolutely adore! In addition to some serious skincare benefits, which I’ll get onto in a second, I just love the fragrance of the oil. It’s light floral which is just so calming and relaxing – every time I press this into my skin, I feel little closer to the spa!

DSC_0815

I think what I love most about the Phyto Replenish Oil is it’s sheer versatility! It’s one of those rare products you find yourself reaching for in the morning and evening, even on days where I’m wearing makeup!

DSC_0825

In the mornings, after applying my regular moisturizers and serums, I add a drop or two of the oil to my foundation before applying it with a densely packed brush. It adds a subtle luminosity to my base, as well as adds a little much-needed moisture. In the evenings, after my regular cleansing, I warm three to four droplets of the oil in my fingertips and press into my skin, focusing on my driest areas. My skin just drinks the oil up, leaving it feeling super soft and smooth – not at all oily!

Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Oil launches September 1st and will be priced at £40.00

Dermalogica launches their new Phyto Replenish Oil at Harvey Nichols Edinburgh*

DSC_0769

When an invite arrived in my inbox inviting me to the launch of a brand new Dermalogica product at Harvey Nichols, you can imagine how quickly I RSVP’d. I love a good skincare evening – the chance to learn about new products, as well as have a bit of a play around with them is always great fun, plus I just love learning insider tips from those in the know!

DSC_0831

So, on Thursday I popped into Edinburgh’s Harvey Nichols store for the pre-launch of Dermalogica’s brand new Phyto Replenish Oil. Not only was it a chance to have a bit of a play with the new oil, but it was also something of a launch for the Dermalogica counter which has only been around for six or so weeks.

DSC_0599

It’s an absolute beast of a counter, full of hi-tech corners with iPads mounted on the counter and informational videos. It’s a counter like no other – if you pick up an item, an accompanying screen lights up and tells you all about it, as well as how to best apply and use it. The whole experience is very interactive and educational, and I can’t wait to head back in to play around with it a bit more!

DSC_0596

So, after sitting down with a glass of Harvey Nichols Prosecco (which, I should add, is just delicious) we were introduced to Jean-Paul, Dermalogica’s only male skincare expert, who was leading the evening’s presentation. As well as learning about the new oil, we were treated to a demonstration of a FaceFit treatment, and taught all about facial massage.

DSC_0757

As someone with dry skin, I’m a big fan of facial oils – I apply one most nights, and I use a drop in my foundation daily, but I can understand why some people might be nervous. It’s easy to assume that using an oil will automatically make skin look wet or greasy, but since Dermalogica’s is non comedogenic, it doesn’t clog pores, instead it just disappears into the skin.

DSC_0686

The Phyto Replenish Oil is filled with goodness from Chia Oils among many other super hydrating and lightweight ingredients, and I can’t even tell you how good it feels on the skin. After passing a couple of bottles around the audience, we were instructed in a number of facial massages which have been specially designed to hydrate and moisturise.

Unknown

I’ve already started to include a little facial massage into my evening routine, so I’ll let you know if I start to see a difference! Then, we were all treated to some facial mapping. It’s a great little service that Dermalogica offer to see what and where your skin needs a little more TLC, and it’s nice to know your doing all the right things! Then, it was time to head home, laden with the most generous of goody bags – I was very kindly gifted a full size bottle of the Phyto Replenish Oil, which I’ve been testing all weekend. I’ll have a full review up soon, but spoiler alert – it’s a gem!

*Thank you to Harvey Nichols Edinburgh and Dermalogica for inviting me to the event.

The Horseshoe Restaurant and Rooms*

DSC_0359

I’d never been to Peebles properly before heading to The Horseshoe Restaurant and Rooms in Eddleston. I think I had driven through in the middle of the night on the way back up from Cheshire, but considering how close it is to Edinburgh, I’m kind of amazed and ashamed I’d never seen it in the daylight.

DSC_0339

The Horseshoe Restaurant and Rooms in located just off the road in Eddleston is definition of picture postcard pretty. With most of the main restaurant dating back to 1862, it was originally a blacksmith’s forge and the rooms are located in a Victorian school building. It’s the cosiest of set ups, and when I found out that they even have their own kitchen garden, I was in absolute heaven!

DSC_0622

Attention to detail is everywhere at the Horseshoe – even the planting beds are planted to supplement the kitchen. Just outside the rooms there are wild strawberries, lavender and daisies, all of which can be used either for desserts or for their wild flower displays which are sprinkled throughout the buildings.

DSC_0459

The restaurant is possibly one of the most comfortable I’ve been in. It’s a luxe mix of golds and rich woods, with candles flickering in every corner. The sitting room and lounge, also has a beautifully large circle window which lets you sit and watch the world go by. The dining room is an intimate affair with only 10 tables which vary in size, meaning it’s easy to find a corner to tuck yourself into to enjoy your meal. We started with amuse bouche of red pepper cream with a red pepper crisp, then duck with a little foie gras. Both were rich and flavorful, setting the scene for the rest of lunch. We also tucked into some of the freshly baked breads and home-churned butter. The olive studded option was satisfyingly warm, with a light crust and springy texture.

Summer truffle risotto, king oyster mushroom and mushroom ketchupThen we moved onto starters, and honestly, there was only one option I was going to choose – a Summer truffle risotto, king oyster mushroom and mushroom ketchup. I’m always a touch nervous opting for a heavy starter, but this one was absolutely heavenly. The rice was perfectly cooked, whilst the mushroom added texture. The cheese and truffle shavings were also a absolute revelation – they were so rich, whilst there was also a citrus element, which cut through the richness, balancing the dish.

Venison loin, black pudding, potato terrine, carrot, raspberries

Then I moved onto the main course, which was a study in rich comfort – Venison loin, black pudding, potato terrine, carrot, raspberries. I was a little apprehensive about ordering venison – I’ve not had it in years, and I’m not a fan of meat that’s overpoweringly gamey. This however was an absolute dream. The venison was melt-in-the-mouth tender, juicy, with a delicate flavour, which sat perfectly with the homemade black pudding which was rich and spicy. The raspberries cut through all the rich meat, with a pleasing tartness, whilst the chard was surprisingly sweet.

Petit Fours

After savouring every mouthful we headed back through to the sitting room and bar area for tea and petits fours. A sort of salted chocolate fudge was absolutely delicious – rich and smooth, and I’m already pondering ways of recreating it at home.

DSC_0590

The Horseshoe is the perfect spot to while away the afternoon, delighting in food that has been thoughtfully sourced and cooked. The pairings of flavours were really incredible, and the wine list is something special too! The Horseshoe offers over 300 bottles – and keep a special eye out for resident wine expert Mark Slaney’s sourced ‘Desert’ Wines!

DSC_0653

If you’re more in the mood for supper, they offer both an a la carte and tasting menu with accompanying wines. There are eight en-suite bedrooms which are, again, so comfy and cosy. Farrow and Ball paint, with crisp white linens mean that you can partake in some of Mark’s wine suggestions without worrying about how to get home safely.

Lunch at The Horseshoe Restaurant with Rooms starts at £20.00 for two courses and their website is here.
