Review: The Old Course Hotel

The Old Course Hotel Review

First of all, Happy New Year! I hope you’re enjoying a gentle and enjoyable start to the year, and I thought I would mix it up a little and do a post which is a little different from normal! Even though I went to both school and university in St Andrews, I’ve stayed at the somewhat iconic Old Course Hotel several times, both with friends and family. Tucked just behind the dunes of the Old Course and West Sands beach, it’s pretty perfectly located if you want to explore the town, or, if you want to take some time to unwind. I visited just before the Christmas rush, as I was seeing some friends, and I didn’t want to impose on their apartment in town.

The Old Course Hotel Review-2

The hotel, honestly, is a bit hit and miss. The staff are unfailingly helpful and cheery, although there doesn’t seem to be the attention to detail you might expect from a member of Leading Hotels of the World. The rooms don’t feel luxurious or sumptuous; if anything they’re a little dated and in need of a little TLC. My room’s carpet was a little loose, and there were various scuffs and chunks taken out of the wall, and the curtains were snagged and stained. Unfortunately I was woken up at 8am by a recycling truck emptying what sounded like a billion bottles, which wasn’t too fun. I don’t want to get too negative, because the hotel is fine, but considering they charge upwards £400 per night in the summer, I would really expect rather more! I have to say though, the bed was super comfy – neither too hard or soft, with four lovely pillows (two were weirdly rock hard, and none of them, unfortunately were down) it was almost too easy to fall asleep!

The Old Course Hotel Review-3

I have to admite to harbouring a major soft spot for the bathrooms – clad in contrasting marble, with a heavenly deep bath, I can (and have) spent hours in there! The Old Course is the only hotel outside the US to partner with Kohler, and as a result they are pretty special. There is an almost waterfall-like tap to fill the bath, along with a rain-like shower which left me feeling squeaky clean and ever so relaxed! The partnership with Kohler continues down to the spa, which you can read about in my review here.

The Old Course Hotel Review-4

The in-room toiletries are provided by Arran Aromatics, and it’s lovely to see Scottish products getting some well needed exposure in the rooms. The bergamot and and ginger bubble bath was delightful, and it’s made me want to explore the brand more. Staying in the Old Course is incredibly convenient if you have plans in and around St Andrews, and it’s so nice to be able to snuggle up in a dreamy bed after braving the cold in town. I do wish the experience was a bit ‘slicker,’ but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

Debenhams Spring/Summer 14 Press Show Continued …

DSC06428

So, continuing on from yesterday’s post, I thought I would share all the goodies which were part of the Debenhams Spring Summer Press Show. After oohing and aahhing over all the lovely things downstairs (as well as making a mental shopping list) I headed upstairs, where all the gorgeous new beauty goodies were displayed.

DSC06429

I have to say, the number of brands which were exhibited was great – it was a good mix of old faithfuls and newbie brands, and it was lovely to see all the new colors and products. One of my favourite stands was Cargo Cosmetics.

DSC06430

I’m pretty obsessed with their Jet Lag concealer (see here), so I couldn’t wait to have a nosey around their new stuff. It’s probably not surprising that I’m heavily lusting after the pink and nude glosses.

DSC06431

The ‘Suited to a Tea’ palette was also adorable – the names all had tea connotations, and the colours were beautiful – the fact the shades could be used on eyes and cheeks is a major plus!

DSC06436

Another palette that caught my eye was the Too Faced Chocolate Bar. I’m a brown shadow aficionado, so this was right up my street! There was a great mix of warm and cool toned shades, and they even had a slight chocolate-y scent.

DSC06438

These Sweetheart blushes (again, by Too Faced) were swoon worthy. I love the Laduree-esque packaging, and I don’t think these would look out of place on Marie Antoinette’s dressing table. The powders gave a beautifully sheer wash of pink shimmer, and are perfect for wearing with a little tan.

DSC06441

It was at this point that the nail polishes caught my eye – particularly this quad of perfect pastels from Nails Inc. The pink and blue are just dreamy, and I love the grey for a little unexpected mani!

DSC06442

If you’re still feeling the nail art trend, Nails Inc have also made it ridiculously easy with their 2 in 1 polishes. One end has a gorgeous colour, whilst the other has a fun topcoat. I love the way you can decide how crazy you want your nails to be (plus those topcoats are perfect for hiding chips!)

DSC06457

I spent quite a while at the Clarins section – the brand are finally coming out with a Chubby Stick contender – as usual, the nudes and pinks caught my eye, but those bright corals are a beach staple!

DSC06458

The collection is inspired by Brazil, and look at those colours! I’m obsessed with that blue eyeliner – can you imagine that with a tan?!

DSC06460

The bronzer is something special too! It’s completely matte, apart from that teeny apricot diamond at the top. I can’t wait to get my hands on this for a believable glow.

DSC06432

Urban Decay’s Electric Light Palette was something special too! Those colors are actually insane in person – they’re neon, and I think that this would really be incredible in the right hands – probably not one I would actually buy, but definitely one of my favorites!

DSC06450

As well as these familiar brands, Tromborg was right in the centre of the room. It’s a Scandinavian beauty brand, and I’m pretty sure it’s exclusive to Debenhams. I think the packaging is so chic and minimalist, and the colours were divine – just look at those blushes! I can’t see the brand on the Debenhams website yet, but it shouldn’t be too soon. This is definitely a brand I want to learn more about!

DSC06453

I was also super happy to see Ole Henriksen, as it’s one of those brands I stock up whenever I hit a Sephora. I’ve been using the brightening wipes (pictured) and they’re pretty great. They smell of orange sherbet, and they leave skin cleansed and toned, but not stripped or dry.

Right in the corner was also this display of fun little cosmetic bags – so perfect for stashing all the goodies I’d obsessed over all evening!

The Mark Hotel

DSC02171

While I was away I was lucky enough to stay in one of my favourite hotelsThe Mark, a perfect little hideaway situated between Madison and Fifth Avenue on 77th Street.
DSC09717

If you follow the behind the scenes coverage of the Met Gala, it will probably look familiar – Anna Wintour, Sienna Miller and Andre Leon Tally are just a few of the guests who get ready for the ball there. The hotel is definitely my choice of city hotels – the decor is just the right side of eclectic, the staff are so polite and courteous, and the location cannot be beaten! When we are there, we always choose a Madison King, the rooms are huge, and  the beds and insanely comfortable! Not only this, but I am just obsessed with their bathrooms.

DSC01968

This hotel is genuinely the only place in the world where a striped marble floor and turquoise cabinets look so chic!

DSC01967

You can see why I can just spend hours in the bathroom – a wonderfully roomy shower.

DSC02140

The baths are ridiculously big – you can splash splash like a child again.

DSC02142

The little black square in the mirror is my guilty pleasure – a television, which means I can indulge in my addiction of Million Dollar Listing all from the comfort of my bubble bath – bliss!

DSC02145

What I love about the hotel is the attention to details, from this adorable Kodak in the mini-bar to the Laduree macarons at turn-down, The Mark is just one of those hotels you want to hole up in forever – handy since apartments are available to buy!

The hotel also includes a great little bar as well as a wonderful restaurant and a very handily placed Frederik Fekkai Salon. As a bonus, the hotel regularly hosts fashion shoots, so you never know who you might bump into!

If you’re considering a stay in the city, I can’t imagine anywhere else which would be better!

Happy 4th July!!!

Although I’m not American, I’ve spent just enough time there to feel I must acknowledge the celebration. I hope your July 4th is filled with s’mores, sparklers and loved ones!

The Dorchester

DSC01713

I’m somewhat a creature of habit, and whenever I’m in London, I stay at the Dorchester. Located on Park Lane, the hotel is a hop, skip and a jump away from my stomping ground of Harrods and the King’s Road and I love the cosy comfort of their chintzy rooms.

I hadn’t been down to London in a couple of years, and in the meantime, the hotel has undergone somewhat of a makeover. Gone are Laura Ashley florals, and in their place is an updated take on a country style. The room was still wonderfully cosy, but the colour palette was updated and the frills toned down a notch. Thankfully, my favorite aspects of the rooms remain the same – namely their pillows (seriously, these need to be squeezed to be believed), and their bathrooms.

DSC01714

Boasting the deepest baths in London, The Dorchester has a bathroom which is really the epitome of luxury. From the grey marble walls to baths deep enough to swim in, I literally spent half my time in the tub.

DSC01718

With toiletries selected from Aromatherapy Associates – bubble baths here cannot be beaten. Also – the little stool which you can use to towel off are such a wonderful little luxury – a new feature of my home bathroom!

DSC01720

It is the attention to details which really sets the hotel apart from its competitors – this incredible little bird was right outside my door, I am beyond obsessed with it!

DSC01756

The Dorchester really is the definition of old-school luxury, and it’s definitely my favourite little hideaway in the city. The spa is such a find too – imagine walls of Essie polishes and pearl chandeliers and you’re halfway there.

DSC01759

I had such a wonderful time at the hotel, and can’t wait to find the time to return (and I won’t be leaving a few years between visits this time).

I stayed in a Deluxe King Room, where rates start at £474 per night plus VAT
